A Dream of Spring

sailinginiceywaterAfter a long winter, one of the longest winters Boston has seen in years, the BUDS finally got out on the water on March 24th. While we were still sailing among ice chunks, it was good to finally get out on the Charles. Originally practice was to begin the first week of March, however mother nature must not have got the memo and the temperature refused to rise.

Thankfully, the spring break trip to Miami from March 8th- 14th allowed the buds to get their feet wet with 5 days of perfect sailing conditions. The trip, as always, was a great chance for the team to grow closer and develop great sailing skills along the way. To add to the significance of the trip, our last day of sailing was marked with a double rainbow!

After returning to Boston and finding the river still frozen solid, the team spent the week training at the gym. However, by the 17th of march, the team decided it was time to act. Operation ice pick began in earnest.

Believe it or not, the plan worked and after a while, visible progress was made.

After a solid day’s work and one more week of melting, the river finally gave in and thawed enough to sail.

A new year

Welcome back and happy new year! The buds are back in action! As this new semester starts up and the buds begin preparing for a new season, let’s take the time to recognize our fantastic alumni.
Thank you for following and supporting this team these past years. Without your support, our team would not be nearly as successful.

Stay tuned for photos of the alumni regatta from the day of the banquet.

Alumni banquet

The alumni banquet last weekend was a huge success! Recent and old alumni joined us for a day of sailing at the Pier Park community sailing center which was a blast for all. Afterwords, festivities moved over to the Hyatt where old friends were reunited and alumni and current BUDS swapped stories about their times as part of the BUDS.
A special thanks to gold medal winning 470 crew and alumnus Lynne Jewell for taking the time to come out and share her Olympic experience as well as life as a female sailor.
A big thanks for all alumni who attended and helped made this event the success it was! We hope you all had as a great a time as us and we hope to see you all again in the near future!

A New Season

The BUDS are back, and the fall season is under way. After a fun summer, the BUDS have returned to home waters and some of us already have a regatta under our belt.

We started with preseason practices at the Pleon Yacht Club in Marblehead (where we had finished off the last season). With good wind, we got great practice sailing 420’s in waves, and it was an excellent way to get back into sailing mode after a summer off. By the time pre season was over, the team was ready for action.

With the start of the regular season, the BUDS got to welcome our new Assistant Coach, recent graduate- Cam Fraser. Now our coaching staff has another alumni to join its ranks to stand beside Bobby Martin and Stan Schreyer himself.

Last weekend we sent sailors to Yale, MIT and Maine Maritime. As a member of the Sloop team, I journeyed to Maine Maritime along with fellow Sloop Team members, Connor Astwood (Skipper), Brendan Cook (Tactician), and Maggie Swanson (Jib Trimmer). We also brought along some of our new freshmen for their first college regatta. We all had a great weekend sailing, with the freshmen placing well in their events and us sloop sailors earning a qualifying position for the New Englands. A shout out to the Lichensteins (one of our new freshman’s, Lily’s, parents) for generously offering lodging!

As a team we’ve had a really great couple weeks of practice and we’re looking forward to a fun productive season this year.
Thanks for following our progress, and keep an eye out for photos to follow!
