The BUDS competed this weekend at the Pine Trophy, hosted by Coast Guard Academy. This event was the sloop racing qualifiers for New England Sloops and was sailed in Colgate 26s. Saturday’s conditions were a gusty 15-20kts and started with one of the other teams snapping a mast in half before the first race. The breeze picked up throughout the day and as the races progressed so did the skills of all the teams. Downwind legs were all very close with many boats passing back and forth in the puffs. The next day proved to be a bigger challenge with lighter conditions which emphasized boathandling. After taking 3 hours to complete the last two races for a total of 9, racing ended and teams were sent home.
